Do you need some help with your prescription bills? Perhaps Extra Help is for you. Extra Help is available through Social Security for persons with modest incomes and limited resources. Extra Help can help with premiums, deductibles and co-pays.
Income is generally limited to $16,335 for an individual or $22,065 for a married couple living together. Income includes Social Security, wages and any other form of income. Resources are limited to $13,070 for an individual or $26,120 for a married couple living together. These include such things as bank accounts, stocks and bonds. Not counted is the house or car.
Social Security has an easy-to-use online application. You can find it at www.socialsecurity.gov/prescriptionhelp. To apply by phone or have an application mailed to you, call Social Security at (800) 772-1213 (TTY (800) 325-0778) and ask for the Application for Help with Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Costs (SSA-1020). Or go to the nearest Social Security office.
Help is also available at the senior center. Call 272-3620 and ask for an appointment with a SHICK counselor.
AARP Defensive Driving class will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday. This is a refresher course designed especially for drivers age 50 and older. Call 272-3620 to sign up for the class.
If you are a member of AARP the cost is $12 (bring your membership card). Not a member of AARP? Then the cost is $14. Be sure to bring your driver's license. Many insurance companies offer a discount upon completion of this course. Check with your insurance agent.

This year, 2012, is the 40th anniversary of Meals on Wheels in Garden City. Many thanks to the volunteers from Judy Whitehill's Garden City Community College class, Gorden and Pearl Allen, Don and Rosemary Mehrer, Isela Hall, Liz Schoepner, Rich Taylor, Bill Schmekel, Ruby Buller, Martha Morley and Duane Riley who delivered Meals on Wheels last week.

Friday has line dancing at 8:30 a.m. A nurse from St. Catherine Hospital will be here from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Bridge starts at 12:45 p.m. The Finney County Senior Citizens Association covered dish dinner begins at 6 p.m. Good food, good friends and, this month, good jazz entertainment.
Saturday, the pool room is open from 1 to 4 p.m.
Monday, the Walking Club meets at 8:30 a.m. The Humdinger Band practices at 12:30 p.m. Double pinochle begins at 12:30 p.m. The Upbeats Band practices at 3 p.m. Zumba begins at 5:30 p.m. Duplicate bridge starts at 7 p.m.
Tuesday has the AARP Defensive Driving class from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Gentle exercises begin at 11 a.m. Pitch starts at 12:30 p.m. Bridge begins at 1:15 p.m.
May 9 begins with line dancing at 8:30 a.m. Pinochle begins at 12:30 p.m. Life Writing and Completely Unraveled meet at 1 p.m. The dance at 7:30 p.m. will feature the Pruitt Band. The recommended donation is $5 per person. Bring finger food for the break.
Lunch is served at noon.
Thursday: Bierock casserole, peas, mixed vegetables, creamy fruit salad.
Friday: Barbecue beef on a bun, potato salad, coleslaw, plums.
Monday: Porcupine meatballs on noodles, confetti cottage cheese salad, wheat roll, citrus fruit.
Tuesday: Roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy, steamed cabbage, muffin, apple crisp.
May 9: Chicken and stuffing, peas, winter vegetables, wheat bread, lemon bars.
