At Goodland, Brett O'Neil scored 16 points, and Joey Meyer and Drew Kite added 14 each to pace the Scott City Beavers to a 71-37 victory on Friday night to open defense of their Class 3A state championship.

The Beavers, who won in March at Hutchinson, held the host Cowboys scoreless in taking a 14-0 first period lead and were ahead comfortably, 40-13, at halftime. It was 63-28 after three quarters. Ryan Hillmer had 17 points to pace Goodland.

Scott City travels to Holcomb on Friday to face the Longhorns in a Great West Activities Conference game.

At Goodland, the Scott City Lady Beavers held off the Goodland Cowgirls to post a Great West Activities Conference win in the season opener for both teams.

Janessa Lowenthal led the Lady Beavers with a game-high 18 points.

Scott City led 6-5 after one quarter and extended it to 16-11 at halftime. Goodland rallied to cut the deficit to 28-25 after three quarters.

Lowenthal scored seven of her game-high total in the fourth quarter, including 5-of-6 free throws. Hope Cochran paced Goodland (0-1) with 10 points.
