Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday, is the traditional day of celebration before the severe restrictions of Lent. Eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday is a tradition that began in the United Kingdom. Pancake tossing, racing and stacking are still popular. One of the most famous is the competition between Olney, Buckinghamshire, England and our own Liberal. It is a race for women only. An apron and head-covering are required. The course is 415 yards, and the pancake must be tossed at least three times during the race. The winner receives a kiss from the Ringer of the Pancake Bell and a prayer book from the local vicar.
The traditional colors of Mardi Gras are purple (symbolic of justice), green (symbolic of faith) and gold (symbolic of power). Join us for a colorful, fun-filled late afternoon of activities and good food.
Changes to Medicare for 2013
Medicare Part A: Most people do not pay a Part A premium because they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working. Only a few people pay Part A premiums. In 2013, that premium will be $441 per month. Medicare Part A deductibles will increase to $1,184 for each benefit period (60 days in a row) and $296 per day for days 61 to 90. Medicare Part A pays 80 percent of covered hospital expenses.
Medicare Part B premiums have increased from $99.90 per month to $104.90 per month for most people. Persons with income of more than $85,000 per year ($170,000 for couples) will pay higher premiums. Part B deductible will be $147 per year, up from $140. This means either you or your supplement must pay the first $147 in Part B costs before Medicare Part B begins to pay. Once this deductible is met, Medicare Part B pays 80 percent of covered services.
