In February, the Delmar Riney Art Gallery at Pratt Community College is pleased to feature the works of Lee Shiney, an abstract painter, kinetic sculptor and mixed media artist from Kechi, Kan. Shiney exhibited kinetic and interactive art at the Wichita Art Museum from 2008 to 2010, and has shown art in numerous solo and group shows in the Wichita and Kansas City areas.
"I draw from life and work experience, combined with perseverance and luck," said Shiney. "Science is probably more interesting to me than art. In 2001, I became a cancer survivor. You might think that cancer would sharpen one's focus, and you would be correct. Shiney believes the divergent type of thinking involved in the creative process is acutely related to an accurate observation of physical properties. He likes to start with the basic physical properties of an object, a medium, or an idea and rework it and push the boundaries. Ultimately, Shiney says he is an engineer as well as artist.
"I like paintings that are hard to define due to their sculptural qualities, and circles and circular movements because it seems like a logical, perfect starting point for something interesting," he said. The Delmar Riney Art Gallery is located in the Riney Student Center at Pratt Community College. The hours are Monday - Thursday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., or by appointment.
