SCOTT CITY — As the sun set in western Kansas on Frday, the Greeley County Jackrabbit boys basketball went to work on getting ready for "Sunrise" Saturday.

The Jackrabbits tenacious defense and strong rebounding took the run-and-gun Scott City Beavers out of their own game and came up with a 37-31 semifinal victory in the 52nd Annual Scott City Invitational.

In front of them is the championship game today at 8 p.m. against Wichita Sunrise, who dismantled last year's champion, Holcomb, 83-44, in the other semifinal.

"We scrambled and played hard," Greeley County coach Jeff Starkey said of his team, who are 3-0. "We rebounded a lot better than I thought we The Jackrabbits won the battle of the boards against the taller Beavers, 38-27, Isaac Wilson and Stephen Houston both pulled down seven rebounds to lead the way.

"Our kids love to come and play here and this will help us through the rest of the season," Starkey said. "We didn't play our best game offensively, but Scott City's got a lot of quickness and took us away from things. They've got great kids and are a very good team."

The deliberate pace could be credited to intense defense played by both teams as the Jackrabbits committed 19 turnovers and the Beavers had 10.

The shooting woes were evident as Greeley County finished just 11-of-35 for 31 percent while Scott City managed just 28 percent on 12-of-46 field goals. They were even worse from 3-point range where the Beavers made just 4-of-18 for a chilly 22 percent.

Scott City took its last lead at the outset of the fourth quarter at 25-24, but the Jackrabbits went on a 10-3 run to open up the biggest lead of the game, 34-28, with 47 seconds remaining in the game. The deficit was cut to three on a 3-pointer by Ron Baker with 35 seconds left, but then the Jackrabbits closed it with 3-of-4 free throws in the final 30 seconds.

Isaac Wilson hit 8-of-9 free throws in the final quarter and was 9-of-11 for the game for Greeley County.

Jonathan Miller had 11 points to lead Greeley County while Ron Baker had a game-high 14 for the Beavers.

Six minutes into the Holcomb-Sunrise semifinal, it was pretty much over. Holding a 14-10 lead at the 2:00 mark of the first quarter, the Buffaloes led 26-12 at the end of the period. It was 48-20 at the half.

Logan Singhisen was the lone Longhorn in double-figures with 16 points. Leon Cooper topped Sunrise with 22 points and Janis Matulis added 13 as 12 players scored for the Buffs.

The Longhorns (2-1) will face Scott City (1-1) in the third-place game at 2:45 p.m., while the Jackrabbits and Sunrise tip-off at 8 p.m.
