Leave a Legacy Foundation is setting its sights high for 2013, with
the goal of raising $30,000 to bring cutting edge cancer treatment to
Garden City.
In 2012, the Leave a Legacy Foundation donated $20,000 toward St.
Catherine Hospital's Digital Mammography Program. Thanks to the support,
two digital mammography machines have been installed and are helping
with early detection of breast cancer at St. Catherine and the Women's
Clinic.
For 2013, the foundation has set its sights on a new goal that
continues its mission of strengthening the cancer fighting resources in
southwest Kansas. The new goal is to raise the funds needed to sponsor
St. Catherine Hospital's membership into the Midwest Cancer Alliance.
The Midwest Cancer Alliance links the University of Kansas' Cancer
Center with the Cancer Center in Garden City. This partnership gives
cancer patients in southwest Kansas the opportunity to consult with the
oncology teams at The University of Kansas Cancer Center and to
participate in Phase II III clinical trials, while staying close to
home for treatment.
The foundation is asking for help in reaching the goal of raising
$30,000 this year to bring cutting edge cancer treatment to this area by
asking people to participate in the Leave a Legacy Foundation's 10K/5K
Runs on Oct. 5. Participants will be running to remember those lost to
cancer and running to honor those who continue their fight.
A pre-registration and social event will be held Oct. 4 at the
Clarion Inn, 1911 E. Kansas Ave. Registration for the race will begin at
7:30 a.m. Oct. 5 at Lee Richardson Zoo, followed by the 5K and 10K
races that begin at 8:30 a.m. At 9 a.m., there will be a Chris Cakes
Pancake Feed, and at 10 a.m., there will be a Kids Fun Run.
Prior to the race, the Leave a Legacy Foundation is asking people to
help paint the town pink in honor or memory of a loved one affected by
cancer. The yard signs are available for delivery and will be picked up
and displayed along the Leave a Legacy Race. Signs are $25 each.
People can also help by donating $82, which allows patients at the
Cancer Center access to the lifesaving resources and services available
through the partnership with the Midwest Cancer Alliance. Donors choose
the special day, perhaps a birthday or anniversary, and sponsor that
day.
