DODGE CITY Sometimes the new phrase, "It is what it is" is apropos, not overused.

That is exactly what South Gray boys basketball coach Mark Applegate said following his team's 66-43 loss to Fowler in the Southern Plains/Iroquois League Tournament title game Saturday night at the United Wireless Arena.

Despite an 11-1 record, Applegate was aware of Fowler's striking power on both sides of the ball, and his team took the brunt of it all.

"They're a talented team, there's no doubt," Applegate said of the Goldbugs. "They've got a lot of weapons, and all those weapons were firing full-loaded tonight."

That arsenal included 50 percent shooting (23-of-46), eight threes, 12-of-19 free throws and a defensive presence that never let the Rebels get on track.

Fowler (13-0) jumped out to a 17-6 first-quarter lead with a Tem Shetley three at the buzzer, while South Gray managed only two field goals.

In the second quarter, Fowler converted 8 field goals, including a trio of threes, while holding the Rebels to just three, scoring on 10 of its 12 possessions, and they were up by 20 at the half.

Fowler's Jett Reese led all scorers with 24 points, eight above his season average. Taylin Bird added 13 and Shetley 12.

Jake Peters had 13 points off the bench to lead the Rebels, and Trenton Holloway added 11.
