Scott City was the top Telegram area team at the weekend's Rocky Welton Invitational though there was only one other team, that being Lakin. Holcomb, Hugoton and Ulysses all were unable to compete because the schools were not in session Friday and school policies at each prevented the teams from making the trip.

The Beavers finished in seventh-place with 124 team points which was short of last year's fifth-place finish at the Rocky Welton.

Scott City did, however, have seven wrestlers finish in the top-six of their respective brackets. Clay Mulligan, the lone area wrestler to reach the finals, lost to Roosevelt's (Colo.) Jace Lopez in the 103-pound finals, 6-3. Mulligan suffered a shoulder injury during the second period against Lopez actually getting an ice pack strapped to his shoulder after the match and couldn't really battle through to get the necessary points to get what would have been Scott City's only individual title.

Francisco Antillon pulled out a 3-0 win over Ponderosa's Sam Jones in the third-place match of the 119-pound weight class. Antillon downed Roosevelt's Chris Walker in the consolation semifinals by major decision, 14-2, to advance to the third-place match.

Dillon Stucky lost by forfeit to Roosevelt's Zach Legino in the consolation finals of the 140-pound division.

Dakota Hayes fell to Emporia's Chase Sanchez in the consolation finals of the 145-pound division, 7-2. Hayes had won his consolation semifinals match by a 7-0 decision over Roosevelt's Jeff Kielian.

Morgan Numrich fell to Andrew Laib of Emporia, 6-1, in the 152-pound weight class consolation finals. Numrich, who had reached the championship semifinals on Friday, won his consolation semifinals match against Olathe South's Trip Hiller, 4-3, before falling in the third-place match.

Luke Hayes lost in the consolation finals of the 189-pound division to Castle View's Gus Marker, 3-2. The 189-pound wrestler had to go through three wrestlers to reach the third-place match, pinning Newton's Hugh McConnell, then beat Garden City's Dane Myers, 4-2, to reach the consolation semifinals. Hayes defeated Roosevelt's Steven Koening, 8-3, to reach the third-place dual with Marker.

Calvin Erven pinned Lamar's Pat Martinez in the third-place match of the 215-pound bracket. Erven also picked up a pin in the consolation semifinals against Roosevelt's Travis Cary.

Lakin's Dalton Davis lost to Hays' Logan Arnhold, 3-2, in the fifth-place match of the 130-pound weight bracket. Davis was the lone Lakin wrestler to medal at the Invitational.
