With the new year come new worries about expenses, especially health care. If your health care expense is troublesome, check out these programs. Medicare savings programs are available to assist persons of modest means with their health care expenses.
Qualified Medicare Beneficiary is for persons with income at or below federal poverty level ($978/month for a single, $1,313 for married couple). QMB pays the Part A hospital deductible and copays, the Part B premium and deductible.
Specified Low Income Medicare Beneficiary is for persons between 100 and 120 percent of federal poverty level ($1,169 for single, $1,571 for married couple) and pays the Part B premium.
Qualifying Individual is 121 to 135 percent of federal poverty level ($1,313 for single, $1,765 for married couple) and pays the Part B premium.
With each option listed above, the asset limitations are $7,080 for a single person and $10,620 for a married couple. Assets do not include your home or one car.
Applications are available at the Department of Children and Families or at the senior center. Next week, I will discuss the low income subsidy known as Extra Help. Even though open enrollment for Medicare Part D is over, you can still apply for Extra Help.

Cost is only $2 per person. Strength Training for Seniors is at 5:15 p.m. Yoga is at 6:30 p.m.
Friday begins with line dancing at 8:30 a.m. A nurse from St. Catherine Hospital will be available from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Bridge starts at 12:45 p.m.
Saturday, the pool room is open from 1 to 4 p.m.
Sunday has duplicate bridge at 2 p.m.
Monday has double pinochle at 12:30 p.m. Strength Training for Seniors is at 5:15 p.m. Duplicate bridge starts at 7 p.m.
Tuesday has walking at 8:30 a.m. Computer class is at 9 a.m. Gentle exercises start at 11 a.m. Pitch begins at 12:30 p.m. Bridge starts at 1:30 p.m.
Jan. 15 begins with line dancing at 8:30 a.m. Legal aid appointments begin at 10 a.m. TOPS No. 1116 meets at 10 a.m. Finney County Public Library outreach is at 11:30 a.m. Pinochle starts at 12:30 p.m. The dance at 7:30 p.m. features the OK Cowboy Murray Beasley. Recommended donation is $5 per person.
January's health eating goal is to add three servings of fruits and vegetables to your diet every day.
Lunch is served at noon.
Thursday: Beef stew or chili with baked potato and savory carrots, cinnamon roll, pineapple; Game Night supper is loaded baked potato soup with all the toppings.
Friday: Sausage gravy, mashed potatoes, Capri vegetables, biscuit, strawberries and pears.
Monday: Creamy noodles and ham, beets, bread, orange slices.
Tuesday: Roast beef with potatoes and gravy, cauliflower and peas, roll, angel cake with strawberries.
Jan. 15: Chicken and stuffing, broccoli, bread, strawberry yogurt parfait.
