Two days after winning a game on penalty kicks in the opening round of the Wichita-Bishop Carroll/Goddard Invitational, the Garden City Lady Buffaloes came up on the short end of their second extra period game, this time a 4-3 penalty kick loss at Class 5A No. 3-ranked Bishop Carroll on Thursday night.

The game was scoreless through the 80-minute regulation time frame and in the invitational, games go directly to penalty kicks rather than the traditional overtime period.

In the PK setup, the Lady Buffs got goal from Haley Brennaman, Amber Miller and Maria Rodriguez. But it wasn't enough as Carroll managed to get two goals at the end after the Lady Buffs had missed on two of their penalty kick attempts.

"I thought we held them pretty good and played as a team," GCHS coach Joaquin Padilla said. "I'm proud of the kids. We played one of the top teams in Class 5A, and unfortunately, we came out on the losing side."

The Buffs got a stellar performance from freshman goalkeeper Ashlee Richman, who had 12 saves in the game.

"She did a great job against a really good team," Padilla said of Richman. "They held us, we held them. Then, in the penalty kicks, they miss one, we miss two and that was it. It's one of the best games we've played in quite a while."

The Lady Buffs (1-2) will now play at noon on Saturday against Goddard Eisenhower.

in a consolation game at Goddard High School's field.
