LAKIN — Coming off a successful December undefeated should be enough to motivate a team in January.

The fact that you're playing a heated rival and that adds fuel to the incentive.

And when that team is getting tired of the long holiday break of just practicing, it's easy to see why the Holcomb Lady Longhorns were chomping at the bit for this game.

Holcomb used four double-digit quarters to keep their unbeaten record intact as they broke away from the Lady Broncs in Lakin for a 56-32 victory ein Hi-Plains League action Tuesday night.

"The girls were just itching to play," coach Kelley Snodgrass said. "You could tell; they were all over the place."

Holcomb jumped out to a 15-6 first-quarter lead thanks to Breanna Gottschalk's 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting.

Up 25-8 with just over three minutes to play, though, Lakin went on an 8-2 run to close the gap to 27-16 by the half. They got within nine after Jodie Jennings put back an offensive rebound to start the third quarter before Holcomb got back on track.

Gottschalk had 16 of her game-high 26 points in the first half.

"What can I say about her?" Snodgrass said. "She was unstoppable tonight. She's an offensive threat, but I was most pleased with how she rebounded tonight."

The Lady Longhorns ran mostly zone defense all night, with the goal of forcing Lakin to keep the ball outside instead of trying to get it in to Amy Dunn. The plan worked as they held Dunn to just 2-of-9 shooting, all in the first half.

Starting 5-0 is great, Snodgrass said. "But when you're 5-0, everybody's looking to beat you. We've got to be ready and bring it every night."

They'll face that challenge Friday when they travel to Colby.

Lakin will travel to Goodland Friday and host Larned on Saturday.
