Last week I wrote about the Medicare Savings Programs available to help with health care expenses. This week, I want to address the Low Income Subsidy (LIS) known as Extra Help.
Extra Help is designed to help with Medicare Part D premiums and prescription co-pays. Even though open enrollment for Medicare Part D has ended, you can still apply for Extra Help. If you have Medicare and Medicaid or Medicare Savings Program (see last week's article) you are automatically qualified to receive Extra Help. If you have Medicare and your income is less than 135 percent of the federal poverty level ($1,436/month for a single person, $1,939 for married couple) and your assets are less than $13,300 for a single person or $26,580 for a married couple, then you should apply for Extra Help. Partial help also is available if your income and assets are somewhat higher. Keep in mind, the income limits refer to your gross income, not the net income after Medicare Part B or Part D premiums have been deducted.
You can apply for Extra Help by visiting www.ssa.gov and clicking on "Get extra help with Medicare prescription drug costs" on the left column. It will take six to eight weeks for an answer, as they will be checking on your income and assets. You also can call 272-3620 for an appointment and someone at the senior center will help with your application.

Friday begins with line dancing at 8:30 a.m. A nurse from St. Catherine Hospital will be available from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Bridge starts at 12:45 p.m.
Saturday, the pool room is open from 1 to 4 p.m.
Sunday has duplicate bridge at 2 p.m.
Monday has double pinochle at 12:30 p.m. Strength Training for Seniors is at 5:15 p.m. Duplicate bridge starts at 7 p.m.
Tuesday has walking at 8:30 a.m. Computer class is at 9 a.m. Gentle exercises start at 11 a.m. Pitch begins at 12:30 p.m. Bridge begins at 1:30 p.m. The FCCA will meet at 2 p.m.
Jan. 22 begins with line dancing at 8:30 a.m. TOPS No. 1116 meets at 10 a.m. Pinochle starts at 12:30 p.m. Completely Unraveled meets at 1 p.m. The dance at 7:30 p.m. features Craig Stevens. Recommended donation: $5 per person.

The kitchen in Scott City where the food is prepared is being remodeled. Thursday and Friday's menus will feature cold sandwiches.
Thursday: Ham and cheese sandwich, tossed salad, chips, ice cream
Friday: Tuna salad sandwich, diced chilled tomatoes, apricots, chips.
Monday: Meat loaf, au gratin potatoes, oriental vegetable mix, bread, strawberries.
Tuesday: Pork cutlets, sweet potatoes, peas and carrots, roll, ambrosia.
Jan. 22: Roast turkey, potatoes and gravy, winter mix vegetables, roll, fruit gelatin.
