The Scott City boys and girls advanced into today's championship games of the 53rd Scott City Invitational with victories Friday night.

The Beaver boys rolled through Lakin, 85-55, to win their pool and will face Greeley County at 6 p.m. for the title.

Scott City's Lady Beavers took a 48-41 victory from Wichita County and will face defending champion Holcomb, which pounded Cherokee Trail of Aurora, Colo. 70-37, in the other semifinal. The girls championship game will tipoff at 4:30 p.m.

Third place games will have Wichita County against Cherokee Trail girls at 1:30 p.m. and Lakin meeting Holcomb at 3 p.m. for the boys consolation. In the boys fifth place game, it will be Wichita County facing Wichita Defenders at 3 p.m. in the elementary gym while Lakin and Wichita Defenders meet in a 1:30 p.m. girls consolation game.

In the Scott City-Lakin boys semifinal, the Beavers (3-0) jumped out quickly once again with a 19-11 first quarter lead and then extended it to 53-22 at halftime.

Senior Ron Baker led the way with 23 points while Joey Meyer and Drew Kite added 19 and 12 points, respectively, to the winning cause. Lakin's Colby Hamel took game-high honors with 28 points and Bryant Miller added 10 for the Broncs (2-1).

Holcomb's boys threw the Pool B bracket into disarray after a thrilling 63-60 victory over the Wichita Defenders. Those teams and Greeley County each went 1-1 in pool play but Greeley County got the nod for the championship game because of the tiebreaker that is used for defensive points allowed.

A balanced scoring attack was the key for the Longhorns as Logan Singhisen scored 15 points, Nolan Gaede added 11 and Tyler LaSalle chipped in with 10. Kyle Walck and Andrew Homer had nine points apiece.

Holcomb's girls appeared to be right on track in looking for a repeat of their 2009 championship.

The Lady Longhorns led just 15-11 after one period and 29-23 at the half, but a 23-7 run in the third period and an 18-11 fourth-quarter advantage put the game away.

In the other semifinal, Scott City fell behind early, 11-10, and then held a slim 25-23 halftime lead.

Emily Hess with 17 points and Audrey Baker with 15 were tops for the Lady Beavers while Riley Matteson and Kayla Graff had 13 and 11 points, respectively, to pace the Lady Indians. Hannah Mehl, Wichita County's leading scorer, was held to five points.

In the remaining game Friday, it was Greeley County's girls taking a 64-29 victory over the Wichita Defenders.

Haylie Greeson and Carly Robertson tallied 18 and 15 points to pace the Lady Jackrabbits and Kennedy Schneider added 10.
