Deerfield — Noemi Navarrete

Published 5/23/2009 in Youth In Excellence

Noemi Navarrete would like to be remembered after graduating from high school as a friend, a student who always tried to focus on her classes and grades and as a "band geek."

In a questionnaire she provided to The Telegram, Navarrete says, "I want to be remembered as the girl who constantly worried about her grades, a good friend who listens to what you say and a band geek who loved to hang out with her fellow band geeks."

Navarrete has attended Deerfield schools her entire life.

She was in the National Honor Society and received the Kansas Honor Scholar from the University of Kansas.

During high school, she participated in the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), Odyssey of the Mind, band, Scholar's Bowl, all-school play, cross country, Big Brothers Big Sisters, National Honor Society and class leadership.

Navarrete's favorite class in high school was food science "because we would always cook and eat. My least favorite class was college composition because I hate to write and I don't do it well."

One of Navarrete's hobbies is playing the clarinet.

"I like playing the clarinet because I like the complexity of it," she said.

Navarrete's most memorable moment or fondest memory of high school "is my junior prom because it was the best-looking prom ever."

Navarrete's advice to incoming high school freshmen is "just be yourself, not what everybody else wants you to be."

She plans to attend Garden City Community College and major in science.

"I have always enjoyed science classes in high school," she said.

Navarrete would like to get her degree as a medical technician.

Navarrete's advice to her fellow graduates as they embark on the next phase of their lives is to "follow your dreams, no matter how silly they may be."

Navarrete also has one more piece of advice, one she hopes to follow, herself, in life.

"You can achieve whatever you want to achieve as long as you put in the effort," she said.
