Micah Roehl sits in one of his senior photos with basketball and football jerseys in the background, hanging from a wall. He has his own football jersey on and holds a football in his right arm, with a football helmet beside his left arm.
Roehl, who has attended Dighton USD 482 his entire life, played football and basketball all four years of his high school career at Dighton. And part of Roehl's advice to incoming high school freshmen involves sports — in a way.
In a questionnaire Roehl submitted to The Telegram, he says, "It doesn't matter whether you're in sports, music, forensics or just a student, do your best at what you do."
Roehl has tried to follow his own advice.
He was on the honor roll all four years, a member of the National Honor Society, a Kansas Honor Scholar, a Dighton High School Honor Graduate, selected to the Cimarron Basketball Invitational all-academic team all four years and selected to the Western Kansas Liberty League First Team all-academic as a senior in basketball.
His cumulative grade-point average was 3.88.
Roehl also was a member of the track team for three years and band for two years. He was in Student Council for three years, holding office twice as a class officer.
He says his favorite classes were science classes, "because I have always been very interested in science. My least favorite class was Spanish because it was taught through DVDs instead of a live teacher."
He plays guitar as a hobby.
"I enjoy guitar because it is challenging but fun, and I love music," he said.
"My fondest memory was graduation because of all the opportunities that are presented," he said.
Advice Roehl would like to share with his fellow graduates as they all embark on the next phase of their lives is to "have fun, work hard and make yourself happy."
Roehl plans to attend Fort Hays State University as a secondary education major.
He'd like to teach high school chemistry and coach the sports he played his entire high school career at Dighton: basketball and football.
But as Roehl moves on from the school district he's been a part of his entire life, what he'd like to be remembered for goes beyond his athletic and academic careers.
"I want to be remembered as someone that could always be counted on to do anything at anytime," he said.
