Ingalls — Zach Thomas

Published 5/23/2009 in Youth In Excellence

Psychology is a subject that captured Ingalls graduating senior Zach Thomas' interest in high school, and the class has shaped his future plans.

As he moves on from the Ingalls school district, which he's attended for all his schooling, Thomas plans to major in psychology at the University of Kansas.

"I love going into the mind and finding out why we do things," he wrote on a questionnaire submitted to The Telegram.

Besides doing well in psychology, Thomas has attained good grades in enough other subjects to land him a 3.7 grade-point average upon graduation, and he's been on the honor roll for four years.

But he's done more in high school than just study, with participation in Students Against Destructive Decisions, Kansas Association for Youth, Leadership, National Honor Society, and I-Club.

National Honor Society was his favorite high school activity, partly because he had to be selected for the group by school staff.

"I was proud I met their expectations," he said.

The group sponsored events including a blood drive, where he said it felt good to be able to give to those in need.

Thomas also was very active in sports, playing football, track and basketball, with basketball as his favorite. He said he likes sports and how they keep him in shape, and he looks back fondly on the time in high school when he became the 3-point champion for the Santa Fe Trail League.

During his down time, Thomas likes to build computers and read, saying both give him time to himself.

He also loves baseball and can be found watching games for much of the summer, he said.

High school has gone quickly for him, and he'd tell incoming freshmen that they should "cherish every second of it."

To his classmates, who he hopes remember his cheeriness, he suggests working hard at the beginning, which can set them up to have fun with the rest of their lives.
