Lakin — Paul Roberts

Published 5/23/2009 in Youth In Excellence

Graduating senior Paul Roberts hopes he was able to challenge his peers' thinking and actions during his four years at Lakin High School.

"And I want to have made their lives just a little bit stranger, too," Roberts said jokingly in a questionnaire provided to The Telegram.

The 4.0 student, who is bound for the University of Michigan next fall, plans to study chemistry and English, the latter of which remains one of his favorite high school subjects.

"We got to do a lot of different things. I had fun with the people in my class, and I got to discover how incredible a book 'Les Misérables' is," he said.

Biology, on the other hand, did not stir the young student.

"I really didn't like biology," he said. "I have nothing against the class itself; the subject just did not interest me in the slightest."

Roberts is a National Merit Finalist, a Kansas Honor Scholar, a member of the Topeka Capital-Journal's Academic All-State Team, was recognized through the Governor's Scholars Award Program during his senior year, and has been accepted into the Honors College at the University of Michigan.

In addition, Roberts also took part in forensics, Scholars' Bowl, band and a very short-lived chess club.

During the last few weeks before regional competitions in band, Roberts switched saxophone solos from the one he had been working on to a new one. Qualifying for state and managing to get a "I" rating is one of his proudest accomplishments, he said.

In addition to playing his saxophone, creative writing is also one of his favorite hobbies, Roberts added.

"There's something about the creative aspect of both that really makes me feel energized and excited about life," he said. The Lakin senior, who was home-schooled before he began high school, hopes other students will relax and enjoy themselves as they begin their high school journey.

"Do what you can and what you really want to do, but don't overextend yourself," he said.
