Writing and drawing let her be creative and express ideas, and Holcomb graduating senior Melissa Conway wants to continue expressing those ideas once she enters college.
Conway plans to attend Garden City Community College next year, majoring in journalism and secondary education with an emphasis in English.
"I love writing and want it to be a part of my career. I want to teach and inspire others to love writing and literature," Conway said in a questionnaire provided to The Telegram.
She's attended school in Holcomb since kindergarten. Her academic honors include: Kansas Honors Scholar, National Honor Society, valedictorian, Academic All League, and Hutchinson News Academic Honor Team.
Her cumulative grade-point average at Holcomb High School was a 4.0.
Conway's activities and organizations she was involved in included cross country, track, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Who Club, Kay Club, forensics, Student Council, freshman mentor program and Journalism Club. She is the secretary and treasurer of National Honor Society, chapter vice president of Future Farmers of America and southwest district vice president in 2008-2009.
Her non-school activities include 4-H, Miles of Smiles Therapeutic Riding Program summer volunteer, St. Dominic's Senior youth group, Dodge City Diocese Teen Encounter Christ Retreats, Dodge City Diocese Pro-Life Youth Rallies, and St. Dominic religious formation class aide.
Her favorite classes in high school were all of her English classes.
"I love the subject, and I really enjoyed the projects and writing," she said, adding that her all-time favorite class was creative writing because she liked learning about different poetry styles.
Her hobbies include writing, reading, drawing, hanging out with friends and family and participating in church activities.
If she could give one piece of advice to an incoming high school student, it would be to ignore gossip and be yourself.
"Hold high morals and don't let anyone pressure you into doing something wrong," Conway said.
She also has some advice for her classmates: "Make choices and memories that you won't regret. You have the power to make a positive impact on others if you want to, and you determine whether your life ends in joy or sorrow."
