Healy — Kayla Grafel

Published 5/23/2009 in Youth In Excellence

Kayla Grafel, graduating senior at Healy High School, has a piece of advice for her classmates: Remember the past and the achievements you have accomplished throughout the years.

"But when you go off into the real world, you get to start fresh, so enjoy the next step of life that you are about to take on your own," Grafel said in a questionnaire provided to The Telegram.

Grafel has attended Healy schools for six years, and she previously went to Utica Grade School.

Her academic honors include: Boards Honor Roll, National Honor Society president and Western Kansas Liberty League All-Academic Team.

Grafel is graduating from Healy High School with a 4.0 cumulative grade-point average.

Her activities, clubs and organizations she belongs to include National Honor Society, yearbook, speech and drama, school play, volleyball, basketball and track and field.

Grafel said her favorite class was business and computer science, and her least favorite was algebra.

She said there are too many good memories of high school for her to count, but competing in track meets, in particular state track meets, stands out the most.

In her spare time, Grafel enjoys spending time with family and friends, and competing in track and field and other sports.

If she could give an incoming high school freshman advice, it would be to not hurry through school.

"Don't rush through your high school years because that last year will come way too fast. You'll wish you had more time," Grafel said. "Also, becoming close with your class will get you through a lot. You'll never forget them and everything you experienced together."

Grafel said she wants to be remembered by her high school classmates as a person who was a devoted athlete and a strong academic leader.

Grafel's future goals are to attend Baker University in the fall on a track and field scholarship. She plans to major in business and marketing and will eventually use the degree to become a real estate agent.
