Being in the modern show choir has taught Tiffany Nguyen that one person cannot carry the duty of the team. Calculus made her realize how important math is in everyday life. And television broadcasting has improved her speaking skills.
Together, they've helped make the recent Garden City High School graduate a well-rounded student and individual.
Nguyen was the founder and president of GCHS's Green Club, was the senior class vice president for Student Council, the vice president of Key Club, dance captain of the Modern Show Choir, and was a member of Interact, National Honor Society, Asian Club and Spanish Club. She also played golf, worked for the Buffalo Broadcasting System, and performed in Les Chantes and freshman choir.
Outside of school, she volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sisters and her church's choir.
Her academic honors during her high school career included being named a 2009 All-Academic State team member, Kansas Honor Scholar, 2008-2009 Governor's Scholar, President's Education Awards Program, University of Kansas Freshman Achievement Scholar, Academic Excellence Award from the Kiwanis Club of Garden City, completion of the Kansas Board of Regents curriculum, three-year academic letter winner, National Honor Society, Sampler festival champion: Brown v. Board of Education, and recognition of outstanding effort in Honors Algebra II.
She graduated with a 4.0 grade-point average.
Outside of school, she enjoys biking, golfing and writing in her journals.
"I enjoy these hobbies because it relaxes me and allows me an escape from my daily life," Nguyen said in a questionnaire provided to The Telegram.
Her advice to incoming GCHS freshmen would be to become involved in as many clubs and activities as possible.
"Remember to work hard now and play later. Respect all your teachers. They dedicate their lives to help you. At the end of the day, count your blessings," Nguyen said.
Nguyen plans to attend the University of Kansas and major in biology. After that, she plans to attend medical school.
She said she wants to be remembered as the person she feels she has always been: a dedicated person who is determined to make the most of her life.
Nguyen also said that she'd like to share a message to her classmates.
"High school has flown by very quickly," she said. "With that, wherever we may end up, let's cherish the past, live in the present and hope for the future. Life is short, so make it sweet."
