The most memorable moment of Abraham Rodriguez's high school career is when he found out he received the Gates Millennium Scholarship.
The award is given to 1,000 students in the United States and is for a full-ride scholarship to any school the student chooses to attend. Rodriguez will be attending Wichita State University.
"It made everything I had done through high school worth it. It took a lot of work, and out of so many people, I got it," the recent Garden City High School graduate said in a questionnaire provided to The Telegram.
Rodriguez maintained a 4.0 grade-point average in high school, along with several other academic achievements. He received the President Education Award and is a Kansas Scholar, along with several other certificates and awards for academic excellence.
He was involved in Student Government, Interact, National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Key Club, tennis, cross country, intramural soccer, principals advisory committee, principal's lunch bunch, chess, debate, Trio, Gear Up, Skills USA, High School Advisory Council, prom committee, and Southwest Regional Student Advisory Council, along with other organizations.
Rodriguez also volunteered and mentored at his church. He was one of a few students at GCHS in the Interact program, in which students from an AP Spanish class mentored students at Buffalo Jones Elementary School.
Rodriguez said his piece of advice for an incoming high school freshman would be to become involved in school.
"It is the only way you will meet people from all walks of life that will impact you in many ways. It teaches you a lot about yourself and what you want to do," Rodriguez said.
He also said he has a few piece of advice for his classmates.
"There is no such thing as luck. It is where opportunity meets preparation. You decide how far you will get in life. The only person who is capable of limiting you is you," he said.
Rodriguez plans to major in business at Wichita State University.
"I have had amazing opportunities to explore the field and have a passion for developing businesses and growing people," he said. "I want to become a consultant some day and help people with their business."
