Holcomb, Scott City girls advance to championship game

SCOTT CITY -- The Scott City Lady Beavers were counting on being in the championship game of the 52nd Annual Scott City Invitational. And they will be.

The Holcomb Lady Longhorns had high hopes of being in the same place.

Both teams accomplished those preliminary goals by securing victories Friday in the semifinals at Scott City High School gym.,

The Lady Beavers rolled past Greeley County 63-37 on the backs of a dominating rebounding performance in which they owned the boards 48-17.

Holcomb, meanwhile, ran its record to 3-0 with a 62-48 triumph over Wichita Sunrise in the earlier semifinal. The title game will tip-off at 6:15 p.m. today while the consolation game will be contested at 4:30 p.m.

For the Lady Longhorns, the start of the season has been everything they had hoped for after putting in long hours over the summer and in preseason. And that hard work has paid off.

They came out of the locker room at the start and sizzled against Sunrise and were clicking on all cylinders. They scored the first 10 points of the game, extended it to 20-4 and were leading 24-6 by the end of the first quarter.

"Everything looks great when you're making shots," said a relieved Holcomb coach Kelly Snodgrass.

Indeed, they would own a 37-16 halftime lead and seemed headed for a breeze.

Sunrise, though, had other thoughts and came out with a pressuring man-to-man defense in the third quarter but couldn't close the gap as the Lady Longhorns were still in command at 45-24 going into the final quarter.

But Sunrise hung in and eventually closed to within nine points with about two minutes to go before Holcomb held them off for the victory.

"Everything that could go wrong, did go wrong in the second half," Snodgrass said. "We quit playing to win and were playing not to lose and you can't do that and be aggressive."

Junior Breanna Gottschalk paced the Holcomb scoring with 19 points and Amy Stegman added 11. For Sunrise, they got 14 points from 5-3 freshman Tawni Griffey who hit four 3-pointers. Brianna McGuire added 11.

The dominating rebounding number for Scott City was a number that pleased new head coach Mark Campos.

"We've stressed rebounding and getting the extra shot all preseason and we've done a good job of it in our first two games," Campos said. "Now, we've just got to continue to improve the other parts of our game and keep working hard to get better."

The short-handed Lady Jackrabbits stayed within range during the first half and part of the third quarter before an avalanche by the Lady Beavers put the game well out of reach.

"We've just been really playing as a team and looking for everyone," said senior Justine Woofter, who recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. "We trust each other."

Carissa Chelemedos paced the Lady Beavers with 15 points, and Jade Glunz was right behind with 14. Kelli Crittenden was the lone Greeley County player to finish in double figures with 15, including 10-of-13 free throws.

In the top picture above, that is Amy Stegman in the Holcomb uniform, not Mallory Komlofske
