Area tennis players begin quest at state

For six area tennis players, the quest for a state championship starts Friday.
Garden City High School's Jarret Payne and Cimarron's Jordan Toothaker made the trip to state as the only singles players from the area to qualify from their regional May 1.
Payne enters the Class 6A tournament in Goddard as a No. 3 seed from the Dodge City regional with a record of 21-13. Toothaker heads to Wichita for the Class 3-2-1A tournament at Wichita State University with a 15-3 record, finishing second at the Cimarron regional.
Toothaker will be joined by the Scott City doubles team of Shiloh Duff and Jordan Snow, who qualified after finishing 16-11 and placing fourth at Cimarron. The Ulysses doubles team of Tyler Fagala and Grant Prusa will make the trip to the Class 4A tournament in Lenexa with a 25-6 record after finishing third at the Pratt Regional.
The state tournaments start at 12:30 p.m. Friday, and the second day begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
