LAKIN — Once she was released from her orthopedic surgeon to begin golfing again, Syracuse senior Kamie Rash dove right back into the fall sport.

On Saturday, Rash and Marlin, were on top of their respective golf games and a result finished well ahead of the rest of the field at the Lakin Girls Invitational at Louck's Municipal Golf Course.

Rash shot a 82, while Marlin finished with a 87, and it was another nine shots back to third-place finisher Emily Tanner of Larned, who led the Lady Indians to the team championship with a 394. Syracuse finished second at 414.

The 3-over-par back nine for Rash was her season best and first time to have broken 40 during a competitive round.

"Lakin is a compact course and it's just tough to get greens in regulation," said Rash, who has won three of the four tournaments. "My short game saved me and I can honestly tell you that it will win tournaments when the other part of your game isn't the best."

Rash struggled early in her round with a double and triple bogey on her third and fourth holes. She regrouped and was just six over par on her final 14 holes, including the 39 on the incoming nine.

"Breaking 40 is something that I've had in mind and it feels good to finally do it," Rash said. "I started off not feeling comfortable with my swing, and if you doubt your swing it's the worse thing you can do."

For Marlin, not only was the 87 good for a runner-up finish, it marked the first time she's broken 90 in a tournament, and the first time she's posted two nine-hole scores in the 40s in a tournament.

"It feels amazing because I was just trying to break 100," Marlin said. "Breaking 90 is just icing on the cake. My putting and chipping were the big difference. I had a bunch of one and two-putts and I think I just had one three-putt."
