Playing at Buffalo Dunes is like being at home to Lakin junior Maggie Hilbig.
In her second tournament this season at the golf course, Hilbig played another competitive round Thursday in windy conditions to finish second in the Holcomb Invitational.
While Hilbig's 47 for the 9-hole event won't go down as her lowest round of the year, it was still good enough to bring a smile to her face once she started looking at the scoreboard.
"I actually thought I'd do worse when the wind was blowing," Hilbig said. "But after the first few holes it seemed like the wind wasn't blowing as hard."
Hilbig's score was one of three in the 32-player tournament that was under 50 as the wind wreaked havoc with many players. Goodland's Chelsie Gausman nabbed top medalist honors with a 44, while Holcomb senior Stephanie Asmus garnered third with a 49. Goodland's Kirsten Topliff and Syracuse's Kamie Rash tied for fourth at 51 with Topliff winning on a scorecard playoff.
Goodland won the team competition, which is based on the low four scores from each squad, with a 205. The host Lady Longhorns were second at 223, and Syracuse garnered third by winning the tiebreaker against Lakin after both teams finished at 229. Sublette and Colby rounded out the team scoring at 286 and had only four players competing for each school.
Hilbig, though, coming to Buffalo Dunes seems to be just what she is waiting for on the tournament schedule.
"I guess I can play this course pretty good," she said. "I only got in the rough one time and I got out in one stroke."
Hilbig said she liked the fact the course is not too hilly and thought the Dunes had pretty open fairways.
"My driving has improved from last year, so maybe that's why I think the fairways here are nice," she said. "I used to go way right with the driver, but now I'm keeping it in play so much more. I'm pretty excited about today especially with the way the wind was blowing."
Hilbig credited her improved play this fall to having competed during the summer. And also practicing more.
"I played a lot of (Kansas Junior Golf Association) events this summer and it has helped a lot," Hilbig said. "The more I've competed the better I am getting. Plus, I've just got to practice, practice and practice. I play a lot on the weekends so I'm tons better because of the practice."
Hilbig's best hole of the day came at the par-4 seventh where she reached the green in two, then two-putted for a par. She had five bogeys and three double bogeys on her card.
When Hilbig played the 18-hole Garden City Invitational two weeks ago, she shot 91 and finished fourth. At the Hugoton Invitational, she earned medalist honors. Tuesday, Lakin and many of the area high school teams will be competing at the Ulysses Invitational at Bentwood Golf Course.
"I'm just looking forward to playing the next time out and seeing what happens," Hilbig said.
Lakin's Mikahael Rogers shot a 54 to win medalist honors in the junior varsity competition. There were no team scores compiled as only three of the schools fielded the minimum four players.
