In all honesty it's probably — more than anything — amazing we would call one another friends.
While Will Manly, a college buddy of mine from Fort Hays State, grew up in Lakin, is a staunch Denver Broncos fan, I was brought up cheering for the Kansas City Chiefs. Will's a Colorado Buffalo rah, rah guy, I'm a Kansas State Wildcat fanatic. Even our political views differ like night and day. Will is even in law school at Kansas University now, which.... yeah, good for him. But somehow the two of us find a common ground to be civil with the other. We communicate on Facebook chat, and I occasionally get a text message from him when he comes home. Of course, it's usually on one of the last days he will be around, so I have to give him static about his timing of contacting me. In some way, though, we still make this friendship work.
As of late, we've actually even found something we fully agree on — the Broncos are impressive and the Chiefs are humiliating. He asks me if I would want Kyle Orton as my team's quarterback at this point and I say yes. Anything — or just about anything — would be better than the $58 million mess the Chiefs have with Matt Cassel. It's hard enough watching the Chiefs redo everything, but it's made even worse by the fact that the Broncos are on the same boat and finding ways to make it work.
Maybe Josh McDaniels really does know how to coach a professional team as the head man. And Todd Haley is just a spoof of Arizona's late run last season propelling them to the Super Bowl. I mean seriously, who had really actually heard of Haley before last season? Since firing offensive coordinator Chan Gailey out of the blue during the preseason, Haley has taken over that spot as well, and the guy hasn't done a thing with it since. The Chiefs' second half performance Sunday, in which it looked as if the team just gave up, showed enough of what Haley has done — nothing.
So to this point, Will has gotten all the laughs and I have all the frustrations in professional football. No team should be losing to the Oakland Raiders and the Chiefs did — at home. Denver went on the road and beat the Silver and Black team that has been drilled into the ground by it's out of control owner. On top of that if Cassel is suppose to be the Chiefs answer, then in no certain way should one of the game's most all-time overrated players like JaMarcus Russell be beating them. Especially not on at Arrowhead Stadium.
The Broncos aren't allowing themselves to be beat, and this after they traded Jay Cutler, who many of the Denver fans thought would be the second-coming of John Elway. In retrospect, as unhappy as Cutler seemed in Denver, it was the right decision to get rid of him.
Somehow the Broncos are putting it together, and the Chiefs are floundering.
It could always be worse, though, as Will could be out here in Southwest Kansas rubbing it in.
