Marshall: Consolation not worth the time

Published 3/13/2010 in Sports

During the third place girls game Friday afternoon, the media in attendance had some fun trying to come up with some ideas on how to handle consolation games.

Needless to say, we came up with unorthodox concepts, such as:

The title of the game should be changed to either "The Pride" game or "The I Don't Want to Play in This Game" contest. Also, games should be shortened to four minute quarters and have a running clock. We doubt, though, that those suggestions will be welcomed by the Kansas State High School Activities Association. Oh well, we tried.

One of the names to be watching for the next two years in Class 1A girls basketball will be Teresa Wade, a 5-10 sophomore from St. John-Hudson. Her mother played volleyball at the University of Kansas and is her high school coach. Wade, a gifted athlete, averaged nearly a double-double in the three tournament games.

Another name will be Jenna Ferris, a freshman from Lincoln. In her one tournament game, the 5-6 sharpshooter scored 28 points after having scored 36 and 47 in her two sub-state games. Her team did lose to Argonia, one of the finalists, but the winning coach was ecstatic that her team had held Ferris under 30 points.

On the boys side, it will be interesting to see how next year's tournament comes off when Class 1A is divided into two divisions. Division I will play in Hays and Division II will be at Emporia's White Auditorium.

In talking with associate director Cheryl Gleason of the Kansas State High School Activities Association, it is apparent that some obstacles will need to be dealt with — among them officials.

"We'll struggle to fill out 3-man crews of officials," Gleason said. "We'll just see how it all comes out."

Needless to say, the state tournament of the past 27 seasons at Gross Coliseum will no longer be filled with the eight top teams to come out of a 2-tier qualifying system that has been in place — regionals and then sub-state.

Only time will tell if it will work out.
