LAKIN -- Since the season started, the Lakin Broncs have taken the field and done the same almost every time out -- dominate.
Monday was no different. The Broncs cranked out 30 hits against Syracuse, and swept the Bulldogs 17-2 and 15-0. Both games ended after the fourth inning because of the run-rule.
"As far as here, we've hit the ball awfully well," Lakin coach Steve Davidson said. "We've won most of them in four, five innings. We just have to keep playing."
With the Lakin offense doing its job, the Broncs counted on Evan Holmes and Tyler Hendrix to do what they could on the mound. The two had no trouble doing their part. Holmes (1-0) gave up just three hits in the opener with five strikeouts, then Hendrix (2-0) didn't give up a hit in the nightcap until a fourth inning single from Darrin Simon. Hendrix matched Holmes with five strikeouts.
"They did a good job of throwing strikes," Davidson said of his pitchers. "They kept the kids off balance, and just did what they're suppose to do."
The Broncs offense struck early in both games and never relent. Lakin scored three runs in the first innings, then scored four to open the scoring in the second game. Defensively, the Bulldogs were scorched as Syracuse starters Lucas Plunkett and Dalton Simon each had innings of more than 30 pitches.
In the first game, Brock Miller was a triple short of a cycle for Lakin. He recorded an RBI on his first three at-bats. The first was a single that scored Reed McAtee, then doubled to score McAtee in the second.
In the third, Miller followed a two-run single by McAtee with a two-run home run. While McAtee has had no trouble on the offensive side this season, Miller has had a little more trouble on the offensive side.
"Brock has struggled a little bit hitting the ball," Davidson said. "He's not hitting quite as sharp as he did last year. It was a pretty good day."
In the nightcap, Beau Bird, who was 1-for-3 batting in the first game, ripped a two-run home run in the first inning. He hit a two-run infield home run his second time up to bat.
"We're just trying to get better each and every day," Bird said. "We just want to be ready for regionals and get ourselves into state."
The Broncs offense didn't stop from their four-run first inning. Lakin added four in the second, then six in the third. Every Bronc reached base at least once in the first two innings.
In the bottom of the fourth, John Garvey ended the game with a deep drive to center scoring McAtee for the final run.
"This feels really awesome," Bird said. "We've all been playing together since we were little. It's all clicking. This is the season to do it."
Lakin (14-0) ranked second in Class 3A will play Sublette on Thursday, then will play a make-up doubleheader against Holcomb on Saturday.
