The Garden City Community College softball team had one streak stopped and another one started against Barton County in Great Bend on Wednesday. The Lady Broncbusters dropped the opening game of the doubleheader 3-0, then bounced to take Game 2, 8-2.

The loss ended a seven-game win streak for Garden City, who had not been beaten since March 15. It was also the first time the Lady Busters had lost to Barton County this season in five games.

"Basically we didn't swing the bat well," GCCC coach Phil Terpstra said of first game when the Busters had five hits and never had a player reach third base. "We were just really disappointed in the way we played offensively. Taylor (Cange) pitched well, and I thought the defense was good. We were just miserable on offense."

In the first game, Barton County took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run home run by Kortney Friess. The Lady Cougars added their final run in the third.

"That home run barely got over," Terpstra said of Friess' shot. "It was wind-blown."

Cange (6-6) took the loss for Garden City. She pitched six innings, giving up three runs on 10 hits, two walks and she had just one strikeout.

In the nightcap the Busters offense came around, finishing with 15 hits. Garden City (18-8, 4-2) broke the game open in the fourth. Tied at 2-2, Garden City strung together four runs in its half of the fourth, then tacked on two more runs in the sixth.

Seven Busters finished with two hits apiece. Alex Wall was the only one with more than one RBI, finishing with two.

"In the second we turned it around offensively, and we thought the pitching for Barton was better in the second game," Terpstra said. "I wish I knew for sure what was wrong in the first game, but I guess mentally we just weren't there."

Alexa Harvey (12-2) picked up the win on the mound. She yielded just five hits, two runs and two walks.

The Busters will be at Butler for a doubleheader Friday. The first game starts at 1 p.m. On Saturday the home field will be reversed when Butler comes to Garden City for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
