Lady Busters slide by Otero for two wins

All it took was one good inning in the first game, then one in the nightcap for the Garden City Community College softball team to blow open much of any chance Otero (Colo.) Junior College would have.

By the time it was over the Lady Broncbusters walked out of Tangeman Sports Comxplex with a 9-1 and 8-2 sweep Thursday. The first game ended in the middle of the fifth inning because of the run rule. The wins extend Garden City's streak to five straight following an eight day layoff since they last played.

"I was a little disappointed we didn't scored a little bit more, but we've only played twice in the last two-and-a-half weeks so that might just be some of the rust we have," GCCC coach Phil Terpstra said.

Any rust the Busters may have had coming in didn't show in their first at bat Thursday. Garden City scored eight of its nine runs in the opening inning, and had a little help from two Otero errors. The Busters had six hits in the barrage, all singles. At one point the Busters had seven straight batters reach base.

"I don't know if we hit the ball hard in the first inning," Terpstra said. "We just had some balls that hit the gaps, they made a couple of errors, gave up a couple of walks and we did a great job of taking advantage of things. We really didn't hit it very hard, but when you go up 8-0 after one inning it makes you feel a lot better."

The Busters scored their final run in the bottom half of the second when Tracey Stefanski doubled in Sarah Archuleta who had led off the inning with a double. From there the Busters relied on the defense and pitcher Taylor Cange. Cange (5-5) had no trouble holding up her part. She gave up just one run on five hits and she struck out four with just one walk.

"Taylor's pitched well the last four games, maybe five, she's pitched really strong," Terpstra said. "That's kind of what she did last year. She got a little bit better as we went along and hopefully it will continue."

Sophomore catcher Kayla Jeanjaquet went 3-for-3 batting with one RBI. Stefanski and Archuleta had two hits apiece and Stefanski had two RBIs.

In the second game, Otero jumped out quickly with two runs in the first inning off Garden City starter Alexa Harvey. Deandra Trujillo scored the first run on a Regina Aragon ground out, then Kari Ameling singled in Carrie Henry. In the bottom of the second, Garden City (15-7) got on the scoreboard with six runs. Included in the barrage was a three-run home run by Jeanjaquet. It would have been a grand slam, but in between second and third Trisha Haslam was called out for passing Dee Mobley in the base path.

"We just have to do a little bit better job of pitch selection and some other things," Terpstra said. "We made some silly base running mistakes. I'm hoping a lot of that is just because we haven't played much. So I'm hoping that's it."

Otero had a a chance to make a charge in the fifth when they loaded the bases on a walk to Ally Goniea. The Busters stopped any opportunity of a score, though, as Terpstra relieved Harvey with Cange who struck out Bea Stewart for the final out of the inning.

The Busters tacked on two more runs in the sixth.

Harvey(10-2) picked up the win as she worked 4 2/3 innings, giving up two earned runs on nine hits. She had just one strikeout and two walks.

Jeanjaquet finished with three more hits in Game 2, and she had four RBIs.

Garden City will be back at home Saturday for a doubleheader against Frank Phillips (Texas) College. The first game starts at 2 p.m.
