Auburn gets the nod

Cameron Kenney, Garden City Community College football's "Mr. Do-Everything," has made a verbal commitment to attend Auburn University in Alabama for the 2009-10 season.

That announcement was made Monday when Kenney informed Broncbuster head football coach Lucas Aslin.

Kenney, a 6-foot-2-inch, 195-pound sophomore, made a big splash onto the junior college gridiron scene in 2007. The Dacula, Ga., native earned first team NJCAA All-America honors as a placekicker and was the J.C. Gridwire first team All-America punter. He was first team all-Jayhawk Conference as a wide receiver, punter and placekicker.

"He wanted to be able to go somewhere and play more than one position," said Aslin, whose team finished 7-3 in his 2007 debut at the helm.

Those skills translated into an impressive freshman campaign. Kenney averaged 43.9 yards per punt on 28 attempts, including an 82-yarder against Dodge City. As a placekicker, Kenney attempted only eight field goals, making five of them. Two of those, however, came from long range -- a 54-yarder against Dodge City and a 50-yarder against Butler. He also made a 42-yard field goal against Hutchinson.

"He's got amazing leg strength," Aslin said. "You just know you've got a chance when he goes out there."

As a wide receiver, Kenney hauled in 43 passes for 633 yards, a 14.7 average per catch. Three of those were for touchdowns. He also had 23 rushing attempts for another 328 yards and one touchdown. His longest scrimmage run was 80 yards. He provided more excitement as a punt returner, taking 11 of those back for 179 yards and one TD. His longest return of the year was 51 yards against Highland. Aslin gave him a rest on kickoff returns.

"He's much better as a punt returner," Aslin said. "We thought Cameron would be good, but not the type of player he became last season. He's got that extra 'it.'"

Kenney has been clocked at 4.4 in the 40-yard dash, but Aslin said that is even deceiving.

"He runs that time in pads in a game," Aslin said. "Most can't do that. If you're a 4.4 guy in shorts, you're probably a 4.6 guy in pads. That's the big difference with Cameron."

Aslin and his staff greet the Broncbuster team later this week and begin fall drills at 3 p.m. Saturday. The Broncbusters were ranked No. 9 in the preseason NJCAA poll released last week, and they open their 2008 season Aug. 30 at Cisco, Texas.
