Stanton County senior Eric Ruth and Hugoton senior Marina Neira garnered first-place finishes Thursday in the Hi-Plains League cross country meet at the Point Rock Golf Club in Elkhart.
Ruth ran the 5K layout in 15:52.8 to finish four seconds ahead of Holcomb's Mike Wolf (15:56.8). Neira was clocked in a time of 17:11.3 in the 4K to finish ahead of Elkhart's Lauren Carter (17:24.9).
The Holcomb boys captured the team title with 31 points, while Hugoton was second with 43. On the girls side, Hugoton scored 29 points to outdistance runner-up Stanton County, which finished with 48 points.
Lakin's Kayson Matthews, who has been one of the top distance runners in southwest Kansas this fall, was unable to finish the race because he was ill. Southwestern Heights' Enrique Sanchez also missed the meet due to an illness.
Heber Jimenez of Hugoton (16:13.4), JaCee Jarnagin (16:31.1) and Patrick Weaver of Hugoton (17:02.8) rounded out the top five boys individual results. Julia Rosales of Lakin (17:36.3), Karissa Pena of Holcomb (17:42.8) and Paige Wells of Wichita County (17:46.3) completed the top five individual girls standings.
The HPL race was the final regular season event for most area schools as now prepare for their respective regional meets Oct. 24.
Hugoton, Ulysses and Scott City will compete in the Class 4A regional at Lake Afton in Wichita; Holcomb, Lakin, Cimarron and Southwestern Heights will be at the Cimarron Golf Club in Class 3A; Stanton County, Syracuse, Sublette, Wichita County and Meade will be at the Meade Golf Course in Class 2A; Greeley County, the defending girls state champions and runner-up in boys in 1A, will be at the Wheatland regional in Grainfield, while Deerfield, Ingalls, Moscow, South Gray and Rolla will be at Meade. Garden City will be at the Dodge City regional at Mariah Hills Golf Course.
State championships for all classes will be Oct. 31, with 6A and 5A at the Rim Rock Course in Lawrence and Classes 1-2-3-4A at Wamego Country Club.

You forgot to mention that the Holcomb Men's team is defending state champions also. I am sure this is just an oversight on your part but don't worry we will continue to help you do your job.
