HOLCOMB -- Holcomb's Lady Longhorns, not having been on the court since Dec. 13, found the New Year to their liking Tuesday night in Holcomb as they opened the 2009 portion of the season with a convincing 58-34 victory over Lakin.
Holcomb coach Kelly Snodgrass saw her team improve its record to 2-3 and said she was pleased with the progress that her youthful team demonstrated against Lakin after such a long layoff.
"This was very good for us," Snodgrass said. "A lot of what we've been working on really showed up tonight. The girls played their hearts out and that's what you like to see."
Snodgrass watched her team jump out to a 17-10 lead after one quarter and extended it to 36-17 by halftime.
"Our defense was much, much better and we cut down on our turnovers," Snodgrass said.
Her assessment was correct as the Lady Longhorns only committed 12 turnovers while the Lady Broncs turned it over 28 times.
The Longhorns were paced by 5-10 sophomore forward Breanna Gottschalk, who hada game-high 21 points. Gottschalk knocked down five-of-six three pointers and hit both of her two-point field goal attempts. She was 2-of-2 from the free-throw line to complete her red-hot shooting night.
"I was on, but that's because my teammates were setting good screens for me," Gottschalk said. "It felt great out there tonight. We're still a young team (only two seniors on the roster) and we've been working hard on defense through the break and it showed tonight."
Senior Shelby Bennett aided Gottschalk with eight points and sophomore Danielle Asmus hit for six.
"Once we get others involved in scoring, it will take some of the pressure off Breanna," Snodgrass said.
Lakin was limited to just 13-of-42 field goals (31 percent) while the Longhorns dropped in 22-of-49 for a solid 45 percent.
"We just didn't have as many fouls tonight either so I knew we were doing better on defense," Snodgrass said of her inexperienced group, who were whistled for just 12 fouls.
For Lakin coach Mandy Michaelis, the game felt much like the first of the season. The Lady Broncs are now just 1-6 for the season.
"I felt like we were starting over," Michaelis said. "Just before the break when we played Stanton County, I saw things getting better. We've still been playing a lot of young kids and they're just unsure of themselves right now. I am pleased, though, that we got more points -- that is encouraging."
Juniors Jodie Jennings and Amy Dunn paced Lakin with nine and eight points, respectively.
Holcomb will return to action Friday night with a home game against Colby, while Lakin plays host to Goodland.
