Scott Duesing took first place in the pole vault and long jump in Hutchinson on Friday to help lead the Garden City High School boys track team to a sixth place finish at the 12-team meet.
Duesing, who set personal records by clearing 14-feet in the pole vault and recording a distance of 21 feet in the long jump, scored 20 of the Buffaloes 50 team points. The junior broke his previous record in the long jump by over a foot.
"Scott had a heck of a day," said Garden City head coach Mike Smith. "He's got a chance to qualify for state and do pretty well."
The Buffaloes got another 10 points from their 3,200-meter relay of Josh Stewart, Ismael Artega, Logan Schultz and Erik Chester, who finished first in 8:18.60.
The girls team finished 10th of 12 teams with the help of a third-place finish by Lexi Josserand in the 300 hurdles and a second place finish by Audrey Seibert in the pole vault.
Seibert, who cleared 9-feet, has finished in the top two in the pole vault at every meet this season. Josserand clocked a time of 49.29 to beat her previous best this season of 50.2.
Jordan Ortega took fifth in the 800 for the Lady Buffaloes with a time of 2:23.11, while Regan Hill placed seventh in the shot put at 30-9.
"On this side of the state, it's probably about the biggest meet you're going to see," Smith said. "If you look at it, our regional is only going to have eight schools. It was a tough meet, and I think it was good for us."
Cameron Caine scored twice in the field events for the Buffaloes, finishing third in the discus and fifth in the javelin. Caine posted a 142-2 in the discus to beat his personal best by nearly a foot while throwing 154-1 in the javelin.
Chester also finished second in the 800, running a 1:59.72 to break two minutes for the first time this season.
After taking the weekend off, the Buffaloes will be at home Tuesday for their only meet this season at Memorial Stadium.
