WAC'em: Garden City claims league wrestling title

It's a nice achievement, but it's not the most important one.

The Garden City High School wrestling squad clinched the Western Athletic Conference championship by completing a sweep of the conference by downing Great Bend and Hays on Friday at Kenneth Henderson Middle School -- a make up from Thursday's postponed triangular.

"It's nice, but it's not what we're after," said GCHS coach Monte Moser, referring to the goal of winning the Buffs' seventh state title. "It's nice for bragging rights. ... We want to be sure that we don't just focus on that. I'm hopeful that the focus is still on the last weekend in February."

The Class 6A No. 1-ranked Buffaloes blitzed Great Bend in the first match with a 56-12 victory. Garden City lost just one match that was wrestled -- the 160-pound weight class in which junior varsity wrestler Dalton Unger had to fill in for Eddy Gomez.

GCHS ended with three pins in the match, starting with Joey Dozier in the 145-pound match followed by Anthony Shockley in the 171-pound match and a 29-second pin by Dane Myers in the 189 match.

"I was listening to a song and it really got my motor running," Myers said of the quick pin. "So I guess it was the song that pumped me up. It was Lil Boosie. It was a good one and just got my motor running. It felt good to get that pin."

Things were a little more dicey against Hays, but the Buffs pulled out a 46-26 win.

The Indians opened with a 12-0 lead before A.J. Hurtado got Garden City on the board with a close 8-6 victory in the 119-pound match. It started a run of seven straight victories for the Buffaloes, which was capped by a Jonathan Heiman pin in the final 10 seconds of the 145-pound match.

"Some of the individuals probably established All-WAC tonight and that's good," Moser said. "A.J. came off the JV and did an outstanding job winning two matches tonight. So we may have a JV kid that may be up for All-WAC -- or at least honorable mention. So that's pretty impressive."

Not to be outdone by Myers' quick pin in the Great Bend match, freshman Derrik Ortiz got to one-up the senior in his 140-pound match against Hays. After receiving a caution for jumping the whistle at the beginning of his match, Ortiz took just 14 seconds to pin his opponent.

"That was awesome," Moser said. "I barely had time to turn around before he was coming back off the mat. He can be pretty devastating out there."

Garden City needed to just win one of the final five matches against Hays to clinch the match -- and the WAC title. The Buffaloes got it from Myers, who pinned another opponent -- though it didn't come until the second period. Jason Carreon added the final touch to Garden City's victory with a pin in the 285-pound match.

GCHS will compete in its final regular season match when it hosts Colby, which is ranked No. 6 in 4A, in a dual Thursday at The Garden. Garden City is scheduled to compete at the Wichita Northwest regional on Feb. 20.

"Basically we'll use Colby to clean up what need to," Moser said. "We know Colby is going to be solid. They do things right and to beat Colby you have to do things right yourself and can't be sloppy."
