The Garden City High School boys and girls track and field teams placed fifth at the Western Athletic Conference meet in Dodge City on Thursday.

It is the Buffaloes final action before the Class 6A regional meet May 16, in Maize.

The boys team finished with 44 points. Dodge City won the boys crown with 106 1/2 points, as the Buffaloes were 9 1/2 points away from fourth place Great Bend. The Lady Buffaloes scored 25.67 points to finish behind Liberal by 20.17 points.

Great Bend won the girls conference title with 109 points.

"It's a little bit of a disappointment," Garden City coach Mike Smith said. "It's part of our depth problem. We do better at bigger meets. We don't have three kids in every event like some other teams."

Still, the usual people performed as expected for the Buffaloes.

Scott Duesing scored the bulk of Garden City's points, placing first in the pole vault, second in the triple jump and third in the high jump.

After sitting out of the pole vault because of weather conditions May 2 in Goddard, Duesing cleared 14 feet for the second meet in a row. He cleared 14-6 at Garden City's home meet April 29.

Garden City's 3,200-meter relay team of Ismael Arteaga, Erik Chester, Josh Stewart and Logan Schultz also took first, clocking a 8:29.02 to beat Dodge City by more than seven seconds.

Schultz and Chester placed third and fourth respectively in the 400, with Schultz finishing in 2:07.57. Chester came in less than a second behind at 2:08.37.

"Scott still won the pole vault and we still won the (3,200 relay)," Smith said. "We did good in things we have been doing well in, but the points aren't as spread out."

The Lady Buffaloes were le d by their 1,600 relay team of Jordan Ortega, Allie Rios, Lexi Josserand and Chinwe Ekweariri, which finished first with a time of 4:19.17. The win was the first for the relay team this season.

Ortega also took second in the 400 with a time of 2:32.70 to finish two seconds off Kaley Temaat from Dodge City.

Temaat, who has been clocked in the 2:20's this season, ran a 2:30.22 into a strong wind from the south that Smith said hampered some of the times.

"That wind got pretty bad," Smith said. "Jordan finished right behind (Temaat), who finished probably 10 seconds off her best time. It was pretty windy."

Ortega also pitched in along with Ekwiariri, Josserand and Cathy Boos to finish second in the 400 relay with a time of 53.00.
