Christine Chambless and Kaitlin Stockman of Scott City anticipated the chance to face Hays' Paige Lunsford and Hanna Pfannenstiel on the tennis courts again after losing to them in Dodge City.
Stockman and Chambless, the No. 2 doubles duo for Scott City, finally got their wish Saturday in the Garden City High School Invitational.
And it came in the first-place match.
This time around, Chambless and Stockman got the better of the doubles team from Hays, beating them in a tiebreaker 8-7 (8-6).
"It was really nice, because I feel like we redeemed ourselves," Chambless said. "We didn't really play well the last time we faced them and we could have beat them. So to come back and beat them feels really good."
The Scott City tandem opened their run with an 8-3 defeat of Cimarron's Maria Sauzameda and Britnie Jenkins before facing Dodge City in the semifinals. Chambless and Stockman took down Dodge City's No. 2 doubles team, 8-4, to set up their rematch with Hays.
"The other teams were kind of easy and stuff, so Hays was the most difficult for us," Stockman said. "It was kind of scary though. This is the first year we've seen Hays, while we've seen most of the others before."
Stockman and Chambless almost let the match slip away from them, but held on and sent it to a tiebreaker.
"We were ahead, then got down a little bit," Chambless said, "but we ended up pulling through when we needed to."
Retribution was also on the mind of Garden City High School's No. 1 singles player, Jara Strickland. After defeating Scott City's Janie Gunther, Strickland faced Dodge City's Melissa Roetzer -- an opponent Strickland has never beaten in three years of competition -- in the semifinals.
And, just like their matches before, Roetzer got the best of Strickland, sending the GCHS player to the consolation bracket with a 8-3 win.
"I've played her since my sophomore year and she's always beat me. I don't know what's wrong," Strickland said. "I know I can beat her. I'm going to beat her at WAC. That's my goal."
Then in the consolation bracket, Strickland let her next match get away from her as she lost 8-7 (8-6) and dropped her into the fifth-place match. Garden City's No. 1 singles player bounced back nicely, though, with an 8-2 win over Ulysses' Courtney Cate to take fifth.
"That was a really big win for me," said Strickland, who was bothered by a knee injury. "I just wanted to get the day over with."
The Buffs' best finish was by No. 2 singles player Karissa Prentice. Prentice reached the third-place match, where she fell 8-2 to Danielle Jones of Dodge City.
In her opening match, Prentice defeated Cimarron's Eva Giebler 8-1. Giebler ended up being Cimarron's top finisher with a sixth-place finish in No. 2 singles.
Ulysses' No. 1 doubles team of Stephanie Shore and Angela Barbo came away with the best finish for Ulysses. After an 8-5 loss to open the tournament, Shore and Barbo won their next two matches -- 8-5 over Liberal and 8-6 against Scott City's Alyssa Scheuerman and Elizabeth Huck -- to reach the third-place match, but had to settle for fourth after losing 8-0 to Goodland.
Garden City and Scott City girls teams will both be competing Tuesday at the Colby Invitational.
