Buffaloes fall to Great Bend

When it rains, it pours.

Literally.

The Garden City High School baseball team dropped both games of their doubleheader in Great Bend on Tuesday, falling 12-1 in the first before dropping the second 9-1 after the game was called in the top of the fifth due to severe weather conditions.

Then, on the road trip home, the Buffaloes found themselves smack in the middle of a tornado warning that swept across Barton County later that evening and had to seek shelter after the sirens began blaring.

It wasn't a fun day.

"There weren't a whole lot of positives yesterday," said Garden City coach Bill Wilson. "We were totally out matched yesterday. The way they played, they're probably the best team we've faced all season."

The Buffaloes (6-14, 2-8) opened the first game by taking a 1-0 lead before giving up four runs in the bottom of the first. With starting shortstop Nathan Brungardt out after sustaining a shoulder injury on Monday in practice Garden City struggled defensively, committing seven errors while giving up a total of eight more runs to lose the game in five innings.

"It's huge, especially at short stop," Wilson said of Brungardt's absence. "We rely on him a lot. He's our number one hitter and he's our best defensive player by far. It hurts when we have to start moving people around."

Arric Holmes scored the lone run for the Buffaloes with a home run in the bottom of the first. The one-run shot was Holmes' third on the year.

Garden City opened the second game by falling behind 2-0 through two innings before a grand slam by the Panthers sparked a seven run bottom of the third.

Midway through the top of the fifth, officials finally called the game with the Buffaloes trailing 9-0 due to severe storms moving through the area.

"One through nine, they're really solid swinging the bat," Wilson said of Great Bend. "They've got two pitches that hung around the strike zone all day long. We came out and played well for a few innings, but then we just fell apart. We can't do that against a good team."

Weather and field conditions permitting, the Buffaloes will host their season finale Thursday at Williams Stadium against Larned.
