Lady Thunderbirds too much for GCCC

Just as it could have become a rout early Saturday at the Perryman Athletic Complex, the Garden City Community College women wouldn't let it happen at that point.

As the second half began though and Cloud County leading by 14, there was little the Lady Broncbusters could do from avoiding a Jayhawk Conference double-digit loss. At the end, Cloud County had won 63-44, but there wasn't much Garden City coach Jake Ripple could take away from his team's effort.

"I was really happy with our effort," Ripple said. "I thought it was one of our best defensive efforts of the season. We just couldn't shoot the ball."

On a night the Lady Busters hit just 17-of-60 shots, the No. 16 ranked Cloud County took advantage.

From the 8-0 lead the Lady Thunderbirds started with, the Lady Busters couldn't catch up. Once Cloud County's Monique Pitts hit a layup to make it 23-12, the Lady Busters never got the deficit inside 10 points again.

"Garden City is certainly much improved from last year," Cloud County coach Brett Erkenbrack said. "Obviously they've won their last two conference games. It's a different deal than coming down here last year and I tried to stress that among our young ladies. I was glad we came out strong and got a little lead early."

Cloud County (14-2, 3-0), like it had in the first half, opened the second stanza fast and built a 40-20 lead. It was their largest lead as the Lady Busters fought their way back and got it within 11 on a Janel Durler layup.

The Lady Thunderbirds methodically pulled farther away from there.

The Lady Busters didn't have one player in double-digit scoring as Katie Novack and Trista Schmitt each had nine points.

Cloud County's Katie O'Neill led all scorers with 18 points. Kara Champlin added 11.

Garden City will be back on the road at Barton County on Wednesday. The conference game tips off at 5:30 p.m.
