Coming off a road win is always nice.
Down 12 points at Butler Community College on Saturday, the Lady Broncbusters rallied for 71-69 Jayhawk Conference win ¬-- a nice bounce back from the conference opening 19-point loss at Colby just three days before.
"We didn't play real smart in the first half, but they played hard the whole game," Lady Busters head coach Jake Ripple said. "We did some smarter things in the second half. We had one little stretch in the second half... I don't know we got going too fast. But for the most part, we played a very smart second half."
Paced by freshman Katie Novack's standout game, the Lady Busters got the kind of win Ripple was looking for. Novack, who had been a slump since a strong start to the season broke out for 27 points, hitting all four of her 3-point attempts, and knocking down 9-of-10 free throws.
"Katie had those couple big games early on, then had another one," Ripple said. "Butler kind of let her stand out there and shoot the ball. To her credit, she knocked down shots. She goes for 27 and you look down that stat sheet, she goes 4-for-4 from behind the 3-point line, that's a big game for her."
Although the Lady Busters struggled at times, picking up the win was a confidence boost. Especially for a program that won just one game all of last season.
While they are 5-10 overall, Ripple was just happy to see the Lady Busters come back from the deficit.
"Anytime you can outscore anyone in this conference by 14 in a half you're doing a pretty good job," Ripple said. "I was proud of the way the kids stuck with it. It would have been real easy, down by 12, with the way things are going it would have been easy for our kids to fold up and not get the job done, but they fought all the way through."
The Lady Busters will have a shot to move their conference record above .500 on Wednesday as Garden City will be at home. It will be the Lady Busters first home conference game as they will host Pratt Community College at Perryman Athletic Complex. The game tips-off at 5:30 p.m.
