LIBERAL -- There was no secret to the Seward County Community College offensive game plan. The Garden City Lady Broncbusters knew exactly what to expect.
The problem, though, is more like a cattle stampede at an old western ranch. Once the Saints get out and cohesively start running they're hard to stop. And the No. 10-ranked team showed why Wednesday, trampling GCCC, 96-77.
"I felt like we were able to come out and get after them right away," GCCC coach Alaura Sharp said. "When they came back and made a little run, I felt like we were never able to put the lid back on the jar. I felt like we let them out and we were never able to corrall them back in under control."
It wasn't that the Saints were completely dominating the game, but more the Busters just had a hard time staying with the high-octane group. GCCC (9-12, 5-2) wasn't about to back down with a chance to jump back up into a tie for the lead in the Jayhawk Conference Western Division, leading 4-0 before the Saints scored their first basket 2 minutes, and 40 seconds into the first half on a layup by Nadia Rosario.
From there it became a back-and-forth tussle before Seward County (20-1, 7-0) broke loose from the Busters tight hold and built its lead to 35-22. Using its own fast-paced transition offense, GCCC fought back within six on a Cheree Freeman layup on a pass from point guard Victoria Naylor.
"I thought it was a great game on both team's part," Seward County coach Toby Wynn said. "I thought Garden was playing hard and really wanted to win, and I thought our kids really wanted to win. Both teams had really good energy. They wanted to run and we wanted to run. It was one of those games if you're a fan, it's a fun game to watch."
Whatever fun it may have for the audience, the Busters just didn't want the hectic pace to be too much of a problem. Through the first 20 minutes it never really was despite the Saints scoring the final four points of the half and leading 45-35 at the break. In the first half, GCCC shot 45.7 percent from the floor, and Seward County was at 57.1 percent.
The Saints opened the second half on a 14-4 run and kept their distance from there. Every run GCCC (9-12, 5-2) made after halftime, the Saints had an answer. The Busters pulled within 62-48 on a Marisela Rodriguez short jumper, but couldn't get any closer. Rodriguez was the Busters' main recipient of passes down low as she finished with a team-high 18 points and 10 rebounds.
"(Seward County's) transition is really good," Rodriguez said. "We always had to be on our toes or back on our heels.
"It's back and forth. You have to catch your breath. Their posts aren't that aggressive and so I didn't get that physically tired."
Rodriguez was followed by Cheree Freeman, who had 15 points and was 7-of-9 from the floor. LaMesia Abbott scored 13 and Deirdre Mays added 11.
Seward County had a big game from Rachel Barnes, who scored 29 points and was 6-of-8 from the free throw line. Rosario followed with 17 points, Vaneza Junior scored 15 and Megan Lassley added 13.
"We knew they would be tough," Sharp said of Seward County. "We knew they would get some transition baskets. I just felt like we guarded a lot of the stuff in our scheme wrong."
The Busters will be at home on Saturday to face Dodge City at 5:30 p.m. at Perrman Athletic Complex.
