The last time the Garden City Community College Lady Broncbusters played Barton County, Jake Ripple said his team looked scared.
A month had past since the Lady Cougars 33 point win against Garden City and on Saturday, Ripple, the Lady Busters head coach, had a little different thought of this match-up at Perryman Athletic Complex.
We really wanted to try and attack them a little bit more and we really did on both ends, Ripple said. It was just one of those nights.
Unlike the laid back style Garden City played in the Jan. 17 game, the Lady Busters came out attacking the No. 10 ranked team in the nation Saturday. It still wasn t enough though as the Lady Cougars held on for a 55-44 Jayhawk Conference West Division win.
In a much different game from the first one, the Lady Busters caused problems for Barton County s 6-foot-5 Inga Muciniece. Along with her teammates in the January game, Muciniece was able to do what she wanted. Saturday, she was held to just two points hitting just one field goal in 13 attempts.
We talked about keeping the ball out of the lane on the dribble, Ripple said. We did a better job of that.
The only problem for Garden City (10-17, 5-8) was offensively shots weren t falling. The Lady Busters shot just 27.4 percent from the floor. It wasn t so much the Lady Cougars defense preventing Garden City from getting a good look at the basket as much as the shots just not falling.
It was a problem the Lady Busters didn t have so much in the first 15 minutes as a Jessica Copeland 3-pointer at the top of the key gave Garden City a 22-21 lead. Barton County (25-2, 11-2) ended the half on a 7-0 run and the problems continued from there for Garden City.
An Amber Brown layup pulled the Lady Busters within five at 36-31, but Barton County never allowed for it to get closer than five from there.
Copeland, Brown and Katie Novack all finished with nine points apiece for Garden City.
Garden City will be on the road Saturday at Seward County in Liberal. The game will tip-off at 6 p.m.
