In what turned out to be a battle in the paint, it was Cloud County Community College who had the upper hand. From start to finish.

Led by forward Kenya Howard who scored a game-high 27 points the Lady Thunderbirds took it to Garden City on Wednesday 80-54.

"(Cloud County) really played well," Lady Broncbusters head coach Jake Ripple said.

Other than a 4-2 lead the Lady Busters held after a pair of free throws from Janel Durler, Garden City (10-16, 5-7) never led again.

The Lady Thunderbirds went to the 5-foot-10 Howard all game, and she had an answer. Howard finished with an impressive 11-of-13 showing from the floor. She also showed her poise on the defensive side with four steals. The only answer, Garden City really had was to go inside to Durler and Briana Loadholt. Durler stepped out of her recent funk and scored 16 points on 8-of-11 from the floor. The only thing holding her back -- foul trouble.

"We got Janel Durler back on track," Ripple said. "Howard did a nice job of getting her in foul trouble, but Janel really had a nice game. She only played 20 minutes."

Cloud County (20-4, 9-2) ranked 21st in the nation shut down the Lady Busters most potent outside threat Katie Novack, who was dealing with flu-like symptons. Garden City's leading scorer finished with just six points. She was 0-of-3 from 3-point range.

"They were on Katie pretty good," Ripple said. "Katie was pretty sick and we knew she was going to have a rough time.

The Lady Busters finished 22-of-52 from the floor. Along with Durler, point guard Amber Brown finished in double-figures as she had 13 points, but she turned the ball over seven times.

Amy Chapman finished with 13 points for Cloud County to go along with Howard's 27.

The Lady Busters will be back at home Saturday to play Barton County at the Perryman Athletic Complex. The game starts at 5:30 p.m.
