The Garden City Community College volleyball team had a difficult time in its first tournament of the season at the New Mexico Military Institute Classic in Roswell, N.M.
After winning two of their five pool play matches, the Broncbusters went on to lose to Yavapai College (17-25, 17-25, 21-25) in the first round of bracket play.
“We really have to work on our ball serving and receiving,” GCCC volleyball coach Nikola Petrovic said. “We’re going to start today really working on that in practice.”
Garden City opened up pool play, which was a best of three set up, by defeating Air Force Academy Prep 25-17, 21-25, 15-7. The volleyball team followed that with losses to Eastern Arizona (25-17, 15-25) and Frank Phillips College (25-13, 25-21). But with the top-three teams in pool play advancing, the Broncbusters earned a spot in the bracket by defeating Trinidad State 25-21, 19-25, 15-8.
“We just were not ready for this tournament,” Petrovic said. “Hopefully we’ll be prepared for our home match on Wednesday against Colby Community, who we scrimmaged against earlier this year.”
