From what he's seen this spring, Garden City Community College head football coach Lucas Aslin has been pleased with his team.
It's not as if he's evaluating everything the Broncbusters will have to offer for next season yet, but it's a start. And so far Aslin likes what he sees. Friday, fans will get a look at what the Busters have worked on to this point during the spring at the annual spring scrimmage at Memorial Stadium. The game will start at 7 p.m.
"The good thing about the spring is you develop some skills and things like that," Aslin said. "We have our quarterback that played last year is returning and some guys who were there so we can do some things. It's been a good spring, a good learning curve."
The quarterback situation is one area Aslin is excited to see. It will be the first time since his arrival to Garden City that the Broncbusters have the starter from the previous season back.
"It's nice because this is the first spring we've had the guy who is probably going to be your guy in the fall," Aslin said. "So that's good. We've got some good pieces back defensively. We've got some receivers back we feel pretty good about."
The quarterback fans will have a chance to see since the Busters ended their 2007 campaign with a 55-28 loss to Fort Scott in the Jayhawk Conference playoffs on Nov. 4 is Eugene Smith. Smith finished the season with 542 yards passing in six conference game, which was fifth best in the conference. Smith earned second team All-Conference.
As far as how offense the crowd will see, the Busters will show plenty. Of course, the spring game is always a more watered down version, there will only be an offense and a defense going after one another, no teams will be drawn up. Aslin said the system will be similar to how the University of Oklahoma runs its scrimmage. Touchdowns, third conversions, first downs will all be worth so many points for the offense. The defense will score points by defensive stops, interceptions and fumbles.
Last year the Busters had 30 play in the spring scrimmage and Aslin said there will be a few more in this years game.
