GCCC softball vs Dodge

There are always the positives to look at when it comes to a win.

Garden City Community College softball coach Phil Terpstra was sure to point those out after the Lady Broncbusters swept Dodge City 10-7 and 5-2 at Tangeman Sports Complex. But at the end of game 2, he was more than willing to point to where he wasn't so happy.

"I didn't think we were as mentally prepared as we should have been as far as just being ready to play," Terpstra said. "What's nice is that we did find a way to win both games."

In both games, the Lady Busters (17-8, 3-3) did have the one sure-way to guarantee at least a run -- the home run. Four of the five Garden City home runs came from two players. In the first game it was Becky Diehl's show. The Busters centerfielder hit two solo shots, raising her home run total this season to 10. Kayla Jeanjaquet hit a two-run home run in the opener. In the nightcap, third baseman Cassidee LePrey put the Busters on the scoreboard with a solo homer in the second inning. She hit her second of the game to lead off the bottom of the fifth. LePrey's second home run was the last score of the game.

"She got off to a really poor start this season, but in the last few weeks she's hitting with more power," Terpstra said of LePrey. "She didn't hit it very well in the first game, but she made an adjustment and she had a great game in the second game."

LePrey finished 3-for-3 in the second game after being held without a hit in game 1.

In both games, the Busters fended off a couple Conquistador surges. Garden City built an 8-1 lead in three innings before Dodge City started to chip away at the Busters. In the fourth inning, the Conqs scored two runs, then added three in the fifth and one more in the sixth off Garden City starting pitcher Joni Stegman. With a 4-6-3 doubleplay to end the Conqs final chance to make up ground, Garden City escaped with the win.

"We're trying to get better, but we kind of went a little bit backwards with how we were mentally," Terpstra said. "We did some good things, but as a team we weren't as happy as we thought we were going to be."

The Busters finished with 11 hits in the first game, then eight in the second, which Terpstra was glad to see, but some offensive miscues of base runners not knowing how many outs there were had the coach frustrated.

"I don't know if it's just that time in the mid-season, or if they just thought they could show up and beat Dodge," Terpstra said. "I'm not sure what it was."

Garden City's pitchers Stegman and Taylor Cange improved their records to 10-3 and 7-4, respectively. Stegman picked up the win in game 1 after giving up 11 hits and seven runs, four were earned. Cange finished the doubleheader striking out eight, while giving up two runs on six hits.

The Busters will be on the road Saturday for a doubleheader at Butler.
