GCCC Softball vs Barton

The Garden City Community College softball team went from one extreme to another in its split with Barton County at Tangeman Sports Complex on Thursday.

On one hand, the Lady Broncbusters had to deal with being handed a 12-1 loss in the first game, ending after five innings. It was a game that left Garden City scratching its head after the Cougars racked up 12 hits and completely dominated the Busters. On the other hand though, Garden City had plenty to be pleased with in a 12-2 win in game 2. After just two hits in the opener, the Busters finish 13 in the second game.

"Really, the first game we just weren't ready to hit the ball," Garden City head coach Phil Terpstra said. "(Barton) gives up seven in-a-half runs a game -- we get just two hits. We did a very poor job at the plate. (Barton) hit the ball very well."

The Cougars needed just three innings to get all the runs needed. Garden City starter Joni Stegman was drilled by the Cougar offense as Stegman gave up all 12 runs, eight were earned. Barton County finished with six extra base hits off Stegman, including two home runs by Alicia Salazar.

"First game I don't think we came out ready to hit," Busters shortstop Megan Hamilton said. "What we were doing the first game just didn't cut it. We had to pick it up in the second game."

Hamilton was the lone Buster to score in the first game and she was one of the two to get a hit.

In the second game, the Busters (27-14, 9-7) caught the early breaks and used it to their advantage. With two outs, Stegman hit a high pop-up down the first base line and Barton first baseman Myra Ramos dropped it. Garden City's Kirsten Bahr scored, and Becky Diehl who was at second when Stegman hit the pop-up also scored. The Busters scored two more runs on a Cougar error in the inning to take a 4-0 lead. Taylor Cange and the rest of the rest of the defense took care of the rest. Cange gave four hits and didn't give up a run until Brittney Allen hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning.

"I hope she continues to pitch like that," Terpstra said of Cange. "That will be really good for us."

The Busters built a 9-0 lead in the second inning started by a Hamilton double that scored two runs, then a Tracey Stefanski double brought in two more. Kayla Jeanjaquet finished the second inning barrage with a single scoring that scored Stegman.

In the third, Garden City put the final touches to its score with a Cassidee LePrey solo home run and Stegman two-run double.

Bahr finished with three hits for the Busters, and four others had two hits apiece.

"Sometimes we come out a little weak, but we picked it up," said Hamilton, who was one of the four with two hits.

"It started to feel a heck of a lot better in the second game. It feels good when your team hits the crap out of the ball."

The Busters will play Neosho today at Tangeman. The first game starts at 3 p.m. Saturday, Garden City will play Butler in a doubleheader that starts at 1 p.m.
