There may have been things Garden City Community College softball coach Phil Terpstra spotted of what his Lady Broncbusters team needs to work on. But there's certainly nothing he will take away from his team starting with a pair of wins on the road.
The Broncbusters opened the season Saturday by sweeping Lamar (Colo.) Community College 8-3 and 16-10.
Garden City did it with its offense, especially the top half of its lineup in the first game.
"We put them up there because we think they can produce and they did," Terpstra said of the first three hitters. "Kayla (Jeanjaquet) and Blair (Stadler) really hit the ball hard, and Trisha (Haslam) found ways to get on the base."
The Busters' 1-2-3 batters, Haslam, Jeanjaquet and Stadler, combined for 10 of Garden City's 14 hits in the opener. Stadler had two triples, then added another in the second game.
Garden City (2-0) fell behind 1-0 after one inning, but scored three runs in the third, then added three more in the fourth to pull away. Sophomore pitcher Taylor Cange (1-0) picked up the win as she worked all seven innings, giving up three earned runs and 10 hits. She struck out four.
In the nightcap, the Runnin' Lopes constructed a 7-5 lead after three innings, four in the second, three in the third, off GCCC pitcher Alexa Harvey.
"Alexa actually did pretty well," Terpstra said. "It was a little weird in that (Lamar) wasn't hitting the ball out of the infield, they were just getting it in the right spots.
The Busters' offense got a big lift from the bottom half of the lineup in the fifth inning wheny the reeled off four straight hits. Garden City scored four runs in the inning, then added six more in the next two innings to pull away.
"It was kind of funny, because when I was walking out to the third base box in the fifth, I was thinking to myself, 'our bottom half really hasn't done anything,'" Terpstra said. "They came out and got four straight hits."
Harvey (1-0) picked up the win after working 4 2/3 innings. She gave up nine runs on 12 hits and walked four. Cange relieved her in the fifth and finished the game.
The Busters will travel to Borger, Texas Saturday for a doubleheader against Frank Phillips that starts at 2 p.m.
