The Garden City Community College softball team was hoping to take the field at Two Rivers Sports in Wichita on Sunday with a chance of advancing to the Region 6 championship game. The only problem was the field was simply too wet.
At least wet enough to move the semifinals and championship games to Pratt Community College today.
The Lady Broncbusters qualified for the chance at making it to the championship by beating No. 2 seed Butler 6-5 in the first game Saturday. With a chance to automatically advance to the championship game, GCCC, the No. 3 seed, ran into a wall against top-seed Seward County and pitcher Courtney Auger.
Already a thorn in the Busters side from a regular season doubleheader when Auger picked up two wins (one in relief), the Canadian gave up just one hit, a single by Alexa Harvey on Saturday. Seward County's offense did the rest as they won 6-0.
The Busters were to have played against the winner of the Barton County-Colby game Sunday, but because of the wet conditions games were suspended, and after a meeting by tournament officials, Pratt was selected as the place to move the games. Garden City is to play at 4 p.m. in the semifinals. A win would have advanced them to the championship game against Seward County at 6 p.m. The Busters will need to win twice against the Saints to win the tournament.
In the first game, Garden City (32-13) scored five runs in the second inning against Butler. The Lady Grizzlies countered with a run in the bottom of the second, then three in the fourth and one in the sixth to tie the score at 5-all.
The Busters scored a run in the top half of the seventh, and pitcher Taylor Cange kept Butler from scoring in the bottom part of the inning to pick up the win.
Cange (15-8) worked all seven innings, giving up three earned runs on seven hits. She finished with four strikeouts.
Harvey had three hits, including a home run, for Garden City.
Against Seward County, the Busters' offense never got off the ground against Auger. The Saints in return picked apart Harvey, GCCC's starting pitcher through the first three innings. Seward County (37-14) scored six runs (three earned) on eight hits off Harvey through 3 1/3 innings before she was relieved by Cange. The six runs Seward County was more than enough as Auger did the rest. She struck out 10 and gave up just one walk along with the one hit.
If the Busters were to pick up a trifecta of wins today, they will advance to the NJCAA Division I national tournament in St. George, Utah, May 13-16.
