GCCC softball picks up second sweep of season

Published 2/17/2009 in Sports : GCCC

By The Telegram Sports Staff

Two weekend road trips, two sweeps.

The Garden City Community College softball team swept through Borger, Texas, on Saturday and beat Frank Phillips 20-4 and 5-1. It gives the Lady Broncbusters four straight wins to open the season after sweeping Lamar (Colo.) on Feb. 7.

"Our top five were pretty good again," GCCC head coach Phil Terpstra said of his offensive lineup. "It was just a good day again."

Four of the Busters' top five hitters (Trisha Haslam, Kayla Jeanjaquet, Blair Stalder and Alexa Harvey) combined to have 10 of Garden City's 13 hits in the second game win. In the first game, cleanup hitter sophomore Megan Hamilton finished with four hits and four runs batted in. The Busters finished with 18 hits in the first game.

In the opening game, Garden City (4-0) needed just five innings to put away Frank Phillips. The Busters had scored eight runs before Frank Phillips scored its first run in the third inning. A pair of six-run innings in the fourth and fifth closed out the game.

Sophomore pitcher Taylor Cange (2-0) picked up the win. She worked all five innings, giving up four runs on four hits. She finished with five strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Harvey shut down Frank Phillips, giving up just four hits and she struck out three with no walks.

"Saturday was the best Alexa has pitched since she's been here," Terpstra said of his freshman hurler.

Garden City will be on the road again Friday for a doubleheader against Clarendon (Texas). The first game starts at 1 p.m.

The Lady Busters will open their home slate Sunday against Western Nebraska for a doubleheader at Tangeman Sports Complex at 1 p.m.
